Made for each other

Meet the city’s most love-struck couple.

Image
Each person has a different idea of romance, but at the core, it involves doing something to express your love for another. Models Jessica Gomes, 28, and Neeraj Surana, 28, are one of Kolkata’s lovestruck couples. They’ve been together for nine long years, but time has not diminished their feelings. Jessica and Neeraj met when she had accompanied her older sister, Nicola, to a fashion show.

They were at Incognito, the nightclub at Taj Bengal (now closed). “I was with my sister and her friends when Neeraj joined us. I liked his innocent looks,” recalls Jessica. The couple started meeting frequently. “I wasn’t keen on a long-term relationship initially. I had my wild phase and it took me some time to settle down,” says Neeraj. Needless to say, the couple has been inseparable ever since, making sure they spend time together every day, either at a party, a fashion show, over an evening coffee or on boat rides at Babughat. Neeraj, a fitness manager at Gold’s Gym, starts his day at 6 a.m. by driving to Jessica’s home at Lake Gardens.

Tyson and Buzzer, Neeraj’s two dogs, wait eagerly for him to take them for a walk. Neeraj, who is from a Marwari family, can’t keep the pets at home, and so they live with Jessica. “Her place is like a second home, so that’s a safe place for them,” he smiles. Jessica also has a busy schedule— she runs grooming classes at the Frankfinn Institute of Airhostess Training—but she makes it a point to meet Neeraj almost every day. The couple remains out till late at night at favourite hangouts like Someplace Else, Underground or Shisha.

Jessica is friendly with Neeraj’s parents, but his grandmother has reservations about their relationship. “We are strict vegetarians and my grandmother needs her time to adjust to our relationship. We respect and understand her feelings,” says Neeraj. Though they are demonstrative of their affection, the couple is not over-the-top; holding hands or a tight hug is, often, enough. They also don’t believe in expressing their love only on a particular day or occasion. Neeraj often sends a bouquet of flowers and box of chocolates to Jessica, for no tangible reason. “Surprise gifts bring us closer. We look forward to seeing each other more. But we also know where to draw the line,” says Jessica.

The two are all set to get married in 2010. “Each relationship has various phases and we have grown and matured as our relationship has continued. Now it’s time to write another chapter of our lives, as we plan to get married next year. We complete each other and it’s time we start spending our lives together,” says Jessica.

Romancing the stars - Raj Shroff

Image
RAJ SHROFF, 31,FASHION DESIGNER

What is . . .
The movie that sets the mood?
Right now, Vicky Christina Barcelona, with the deliciously beautiful Penelope Cruz in it.

The most romantic destination you have visited?
You can’t touch Venice in the romance category.

A romantic way to be woken up?
I’ll be most happy to be woken up with a kiss on my eyes.

Idea of romance
After a hard day’s work, I’d like to sit on a lawn under the moon and stars and chill with someone special to me. We’ll talk about everything except work and have a lazy evening.

Favourite gift

A special friend in Mauritius sent me a box with seven or eight of my favourite perfumes, and another box with perfumed candles, and the whole thing was packaged with rose petals.

Dream wedding

It would have to be in a place like Marbella beach in Spain. The view would be incredible. There would be a shack serving great food and just 10-12 people who are special to me.

Perfect nightout
I like the idea of really long walks. If it’s a holiday, then long walks on the beach at night when it’s really dark, with the water glistening in the moonlight.

Romancing the stars - Shuti Shibulal

Image
SHRUTI SHIBULAL, 24, ENTREPRENEUR AND RESTAURATEUR

What is . . .
Your wooing style?
Through food. Is there a better way?

The movie that sets the mood?
Love Actually, a beautiful, fun movie that showcases all aspects of love.

The most romantic destination?
Coorg, especially when it is raining lightly. It makes the rest of the world fade away.

Idea of romance
My idea of romance is not sappy love or chocolates or flowers. Romance to me is witty conversation, sharing special moments, and enjoying life together.

Showing affection
Affection is something private, which is what makes it special for me. When I care about someone, it’s just natural to show affection.

Favourite Gift
My friends and family mean the world to me, so when my significant other understands and embraces that, there could be no greater gift.

Perfect nightout
A perfect nightout would involve dinner at an intimate restaurant where we could try something new and unique together.

Romancing the stars - Chetan Kumar

Image
CHETAN KUMAR, 25, ACTOR

What is. . .
The movie that sets the mood?
Singing in the Rain, My Fair Lady.

A romantic way to be woken up?
Hindustani instrumental music and a pair of affectionate hands massaging my neck and back.

The most romantic destination?
The Swedish island of Gotland in the summer. Its plush landscape and effervescent locals make it idyllic.

Idea of romance
A natural, comforting intimacy between two people. Scripted notions such as moonlit walks or candlelight dinners seem cinematic and lack that personal touch.

I would use the element of surprise, and time and creativity—write an affectionate poem, cook for her or string a bracelet for her with beads.

Showing affection
As someone who enjoys pinching little cheeks and petting stray dogs, I display affection readily. I credit this to my parents, who loved each other, and us kids, unconditionally.

Perfect nightout
It would be a night in. Begin with great conversation over Darjeeling tea and a “Bird” Parker jazz record, and then curl up and take turns reading Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Sharer .

Romancing the stars - Mayuri Upadhya

Image
What makes these charismatic personalities go weak in the knees?

MAYURI UPADHYA, 30, DANCER

What is. . .
The movie that sets the mood?
Fool Rush In

Your idea of a romantic wedding?
At dawn or dusk, next to a river bed, hymns, and celebration.

The most romantic destination?
The Himalayas. I think it’s the ultimate.

Idea of romance
It could be anything. Holding hands during a movie, tight hugs from my husband after a good show, sharing a cup of tea when it’s raining. Simple expressions of love and great companionship.

My wooing style
It’s changed with time. At the moment, I would give him a chance to miss me. Then follow this up with good food, humour and, of course, ‘the look’.

Showing affection
I’m extremely moody. Being an artist, I look on it as my birthright. But when I’m in a good mood, there’s no stopping me. Which means I can be very affectionate and demonstrative.

Romantic spot
I’ll be happy if someone can find one for me in this city today. But, it doesn’t actually have to be a physical space for me, because the weather is always playing cupid for us.

The Love gurus

From VJs to RJs, everyone is in the business. Maulik has a fight with Priya and calls in to a radio station asking for advice.

Subhash is in love with a girl from his school and calls in to a TV station to help him propose to her. Love gurus abound on TV, radio and, of course, in the real world.

The age of the Internet has changed our lives instantly through websites, blogs and flurried online activity where people can communicate with each other whenever they want. Simply Mumbai speaks to three people who have made love their professional calling.

Love gurus - Deepti Gujral

DEEPTI GUJRAL, VJ

Image
Deepti Gujral stepped into the very popular shoes of Malaika Arora-Khan as the host of Loveline Reloaded on MTV along with Cyrus Sahukar. Seated on a couch, Gujral lends a sympathetic ear to distressed callers.

Why she thinks shows like Loveline Reloaded work: People like advice given without judgement. There are things they can’t discuss with friends or parents. A third person, especially someone who is anonymous and unbiased, offers a clearer perspective. “People would rather talk to someone they’re comfortable with.”

The most common problem she has come across: Men are usually shy to ask a girl out because they fear rejection.

Her solution: To try and bring people together by helping them confront their issues on the phone. “I tell them that if you don’t try, you will never know. Communication is a key ingredient.” Her weirdest love problem: When someone called in telling her he was in love with her. She didn’t know how to react and it was an awkward moment on air.

What people should avoid in a relationship: Judging each other too much. “Don’t judge the other person. Accept them the way they are.” Most often, she says, problems start when one expects one’s boyfriend or girlfriend to change.

Love gurus - Kalindi Badola

KALINDI BADOLA, RJ

Image
In the business for two-and-a-half years, Kalindi Badola hosts a show called K on Big FM every night. Listeners can call in asking for advice on on how to appease an angry boyfriend or girlfriend or to just plainly vent.

Her USP: Badola’s is a non-judgmental voice on radio; she is a friend and confidante, someone you can relate to. People can safely tell her their darkest secrets. She won’t tell you what to do but wants you to arrive at your own decisions. “There’s no right or wrong.”

Kalindi’s most common love problem: People are often unable to accept it when the other person is not in love with them, or is unable to reciprocate. The tendency is to push things to the extreme by trying to force oneself on the other person.

Her solution: To tell people that one can’t force love. Running behind someone you love is not the solution. The more forceful you are, the more likely it is that the other person will not want anything to do with you. “Don’t irritate people. It usually doesn’t work,” says Kalindi.

Why she thinks shows like hers work: With FM-enabled mobile phones, it’s easier to access the outside world in private. The SMS generation finds it easier to vent to an anonymous voice that won’t judge them. ‘Confessions with K’, one of the show’s segments, is all about wild confessions that you can’t discuss with a friend or a sibling.

Love gurus - Savio de’Silva

SAVIO D’ SILVA, RELATIONSHIP COUNSELLOR

Image
A relationship counsellor for seven years, Savio D’Silva loves to meet people, discuss their problems and get to know them better. He enjoys interacting with people from different walks of life and is a great listener.

His most common problem: Extra-marital affairs and situations where couples have trouble with their in-laws.

His solution: He often asks couples to spend quality time together, to go away on a vacation, where they can discuss their problems and reduce miscommunication.

One of his weirdest love problems: A client once sought his advice because he hated something his wife cooked and had been eating it for eight years pretending to like it. He flung it on her face one day because he couldn’t take it anymore.

How he thinks the idea of love and relationships has changed over the years: The media has played a vital role. People are more exposed to magazines and newspapers today, all of which have changed their idea of love. The greatest impact has been in the cities, where there are more live-in couples. Relationships are more open today.

What’s most difficult: Switching off from a client’s problems. “It’s difficult for me to go back home and forget about everything. At times I relate it to my life.”

Get the look

Fashion designer Ravi Bajaj shows you how to make heads turn on that crucial first date.

First date for ladies: Wear something that you feel good in. It should be safe and sexy, and could be anything from a pair of jeans with a top to a fitted dress.

Pick the LBD
Have the figure to carry it off? Then go for a sexy little black dress. Wear a chiffon saree if you are more comfortable in Indian clothes.

Watch out
In case you are dressing up in Westerns, stick to a watch with a leather band. A metal band or a bejewelled piece can be jarring.

Bling factor
Sport delicate earrings and a neckpiece with your clothes. Don’t overdo it. Simplicity is the trick.

Walk in style
Avoid uncomfortable stilettos on a first date. Choose medium or wedge heels. Match the footwear with your clothes.

Men, take note
Men should wear the right attitude, shoes and perfume for a date. The jeans-andwhite shirt combo is evergreen. For Indian wear, choose a chikan kurta with churidar. A casual kurta with denims will do if you are in the Indo-Western mood.

Fashion for the eyes
fashion Don’t forget your sunglasses for a daytime date. They will not only protect your peepers, they look super stylish too.

Attitude matters
A man should wear his attitude to floor his partner. If you are not sure about the right colours, neutrals are the safest bet.

Not too high
Avoid uncomfortable stilettos on a first date. Choose medium or wedge heels. Match the shoes with your clothes.

Made for each other

Neeraj, a fitness manager at Gold’s Gym, starts his day at 6 a.m. by driving to Jessica’s home at Lake Gardens

We complete each other and it’s time we start spending our lives together,” says Jessica.

five things Jessica likes about Neeraj:
• He is caring
• He is loving
• He is disciplined
• His sensitivity
• His simplicity

Five things jessica dislikes about Neeraj:
• He’s tardy
• He’s a spendthrift
• Too organised
• Over-possessive
• No foresight

Five things neeraj likes about Jessica:
• She has foresight
• She is caring
• Great company
• An excellent cook
• Time management

Five things neeraj dislikes about Jessica:
• She’s headstrong
• Indisciplined
• Plans too much
• She’s disorganised
• Too stressed out

Romancing the stars

What makes these charismatic personalities go weak in the knees?

Image
JOHANNE MANTOSH, 21 RESTAURATEUR

WHAT I S . . .
The most romantic gift you have received?
A scrapbook.

The film that sets the mood?
Love Rules!

A romantic way to be awakened?
A nice, cold, intimate kiss.

The most romantic place to meet someone in Kolkata?
A boat ride at Babughat in the evening.

Idea of romance
A special feeling that keeps you inspired, always. It is something that an individual needs to experience and can never be communicated in just so many words. That is my idea of romance.

Dream wedding
A wedding is the beginning of a new life. I would give a personal touch to the décor, without splurging too much. It’s a special occasion and has to be made memorable for the guests.

Expressing Affection
There’s no pattern. Sometimes it’s too easy and sometimes it’s not. But I don’t want to be predictable. I would like to keep the fire burning and react according to a particular situation

Ideal Nightout
Go to a fancy restaurant and enjoy a bowl of ice cream, preferably green tea or banana and caramel flavours. And continue talking till the wee hours of the morning.

WHAT I S . . .

Your wooing style?
I would go to any extent, as I don’t believe in being egotistical when it comes to my special someone.

The most romantic destination you have visited?
Venice.

The most romantic place to meet someone in Kolkata?
The poolside area at Park Hotel.

The film that sets the mood?
Notting Hill.

Romantic Gift
I was in London for a match and someone special had arranged a holiday exclusively for me. That holiday turned out to be quite memorable. It is the most romantic gift I have received till date.

Idea Of Romance
When the heart and the head differ from each other and, finally, the heart rules the head. A wonderful feeling that makes you go weak in the knees for the special someone. It is an incredible feeling.

Dream Wedding
I am in favour of the big fat Indian wedding. I love the huge, seven-day wedding affairs hosted by the non-Bengali communities, where everyone is in the mood to enjoy and have fun.

Ideal Nightout
A perfect way to spend some quiet hours with my beloved would be to hold hands and go for a leisurely walk on a beach in Goa, say, after 1 a.m. We would just talk for hours and no one would disturb us.

ARIJIT DUTTA, 36 MD of PRIYA CINEMA

WHAT I S . . .

Your idea of a beautiful wedding?
A wedding with just the two of us.

The most romantic gift you have got?
My son, Agnivesh.

The film that sets the mood?
The Sound of Music.

Romance Is
Sitting on a riverbank and watching the sun go down. The ambience of such a place creates romance between two individuals.

Wooing Style
I am not much for wooing my significant other. For me, it would rather be, ‘Take me the way I am or leave me.’ That is how I am different.

Expressing Love
Depends on the situation. If I am at a big social do, I can’t demonstrate my affection. In a small gathering, I am a different person.

Romantic Place
Kenya. I had been there in 2007 and Kenya’s ecotourism set-up fascinated me. In Kolkata, a boat ride together can be romantic, too.

Image
NEEL DUTT, 29, MUSICIAN

WHAT I S . . .

The most romantic destination you have visited?
Paris.

The film that sets the mood?
Notting Hill.

A romantic meeting place in Kolkata?
Crowded streets of central Kolkata.

Wake-up call
Someone would prepare a nice breakfast for me and give me the good news: I don’t have to go to work. That would be really romantic.

Wedding do
A celebration with friends and relatives that would continue for a couple of days. No lavish ceremonies. That’s romantic for me.

Romance is
Romance is everywhere. Be it in music or in sitting alone in the hills, I get the feel of romance everywhere.

Express love
That’s not difficult. If I like someone, I would express my affection freely. But I have never wooed and I won’t do it in the future either.

TRINA NILEENA BANERJEE, 28, THEATRE ARTIST

WHAT I S . . .

The most romantic destination you have visited?
Paris. I love the place around Sorbonne University.

The film that sets the mood?
The French Lieutenant’s Woman, Possession and Nayak.

A romantic way to be awakened?
With a perfect cup of Darjeeling tea.

Idea of romance
It’s more about non-verbal communication, and spending time with someone who can read my silence. If I had to woo anyone I would arrange for a surprise gift. But, in the broader sense, it’s friendship and understanding that I value.

Expressing affection
Usually, I am very expressive and have no inhibitions when it comes to showing my affection. But the difficult part for me would be to get into the very feeling of romance. I am a very calm person and rarely react.

Dream wedding
As of now, I don’t believe in the institution of marriage. But some day, when I would get married, it would be in front of a small gathering. Good food and close friends should be imperative to celebrate the special day.

Best gift
On an ordinary afternoon, my former boyfriend had put a bright yellow flower with a long stem on my desk. He had made my day extraordinarily special and a truly memorable one. That was perhaps the most romantic gift I have received.

Pocket-sized dates

Ideas for dates in budgets of all sizes and shape.

Maybe money can’t buy you love, but it sure can help in making the moments unique. But, often, your wallet does not allow you to fulfill all your wishes. You might even be suffering from bankruptcy, not of money, but of ideas.

Time-tested gifts can never go wrong. Why not buy a diamond set and watch that thousand-carat smile light up her face? The romance for the rest of the day is guaranteed.

Image
Option-2
A short weekend getaway is a great option at this price. A quick check with a travel guide and you can be all set to drive off to Mandarmani or Shankarpur. Or, you can take the overnight train to New Jalpaiguri and drive to the North Bengal hills— Darjeeling, Kurseong or Kalimpong.

Book a table for two at a five-star restaurant or hit the latest night spot in town. Dress up, let your hair down and party through the night with your beloved.

RS 1000 DATE

Option 1
Plan a day at home with your beloved. Buy a bottle of wine and whip up an interesting dish—preferably together. Then you can cook up anything else that suits your fancy.

Option 3
Head straight for a multiplex after office and watch the latest flick together. Follow it up with a long, romantic drive.

RS 100 DATE

Option 1
Watch your favourite movie on DVD with your loved one. It hardly pinches the pocket, but is a great way to spend time together.

Image
Option 2
You can never go wrong with a gift of chocolate, straight from the heart.

Image
Option 3
Going together to an art gallery or an exhibition can be a nice way to spend a day. Sipping a cup of tea at the Academy of Fine Arts premises can be relaxing.
